Fall Festival Wrap-up

Mark your calendars for the Spring Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance, April 16-19

Things are quiet again here at Shakori Hills. The last of the volunteers are still working hard to clean up and pack up. The festival was a total success! We want to thank everyone who came out for making us what we are. We also want to thank the countless AMAZING volunteers who are truly the lifeblood of the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, we would be nowhere without you!

It is incredibly hard to pick any one, or even ten of the best festival moments. Del McCoury’s high lonesome voice echoing in the fall air, Nnenna Freelon entrancing people with her soul and grace, The Carolina Chocolate Drops powered by a Piedmont Biofuels generator when the festival temporarily lost half of its electricity. We’ll remember moments watching children giving new life to bland umbrellas by painting them with messages of peace, seeing newer bands such as the Belleville Outfit, Samantha Crain, The Can Kickers, and locals Megafaun, Midtown Dickens, and Des Ark becoming part of the Shakori family and hanging out throughout the weekend. Undoubtedly, everyone has their own favorite moment to take home and cherish.

One of the greatest parts of the festival was witnessing how much people care about this event. Not just because of the music, but because of the feeling of being in the presence of people who cherish the good things in life. That feeling was tangible in the low amount of trash generated because people were recycling and composting much of their waste. After the Saturday night set at the Meadow Stage there was virtually NO trash left on the grounds! People care about keeping this place beautiful, and that makes us all happy!

Speaking of composting, recycling, and general care of our earth, another very special thing about this fall was the introduction of the Shakori Hills Solar Project! Shakori Hills and our friends at The Abundance Foundation are teaming up so that in the near future, Shakori Hills - with your help - will be fully powered by solar energy. With the amount of energy we collect, we will be able to run all of our events and be able to sell excess power back into the grid. Anyone can sponsor a cell for just $10 each, or sponsor on a corporate level for multiple cells, so please think about donating and helping us become even more energy efficient. Find out how here.

Shakori Hills is a special place! It is a gift by which those who have experienced it can feel extremely blessed. How wonderful that we have something like it. It is powered by the sun and by the earth and it is fueled by sheer joy and our deepest need for connection. Tell your friends, and we will see you in April!
