The Story Behind Shakori Hills
Shakori Hills is a turn-of-the-century 75 acre farmstead located in the heart of Chatham County, 20 minutes from Chapel Hill. In 2002, Robert Mitchener and Jordan Puryear decided to combine forces to create a place where folks could gather and enjoy great music, each other, and the great outdoors. The first Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival was held in 2003.
In 2006, the non-profit Shakori Hills, Inc., was formed to preserve and enhance the Shakori Hills Farmstead in order to provide an environment for community building through arts and education.
In the next two years our goal is to raise the money needed to complete the purchase of the 75 acres of land and farmhouse here at beautiful Shakori Hills. We envision creating a community center where workshops, festivals, camps and many more multi-cultural and educational activities can take place. One of our hopes is to build a large dance/meeting hall to serve as the center for these community-building activities.
Your presence at Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festivals and other events contributes to our goal. Thank you! We invite you to share in our goal of preserving and enhancing Shakori Hills.
